Found someone advertising their Ye Olde Proxy Service (http://mukunoki-jp.net). Sadly, all the Wayback Machine captures are very broken, but as I've been archiving, I keep remembering how good we have it, nowadays, as a fandom. You can just dump your fic on Ao3 instead of going through the trouble of posting to 3-4 different LJ comms and maybe your own personal website, and trust that people will actually find it. Dealing with proxy services involves using Actual Companies instead of "some guy with a website". You can stream foreign music legally instead of relying on shady download links. I know reminiscing about the Good Old Days is everyone's favorite pasttime, but, like, can we just stop and go "holy shit, all of this would have been literally unimaginable ten years ago???"

(and this is also true for anime fandoms, like, jesus christ i can't even begin to describe how wild it is that shit like "crunchyroll" or "anime on netflix" or "being able to buy anime merch off of amazon" and "mainstream celebrities being openly anime fans" exists!!! like this shit is crazy if you sit down and think about it!!!)

Nerds have it too good these days. Back in my day (lmao), we had to rely on fan translators posting chapters and episodes to LJ comms, wait months for people to rip character song CDs, go to specialty stores/Actual Real Life Japan to buy merch, etc. etc. Now I can import doujinshi from the comfort of my home and nerd shit is everywhere. And nobody bullies you for liking it! 13-year-old me would be stoked to see the state of fandom now.
