As much as people talk about aspirational shipping, I think the real draw of bland-ass pretty people ships is comfort. Sometimes you don't want to think about what you're looking at, you just want to vicariously vibe. Thinking requires separating yourself from the text, and critical analysis is scary, especially from a feelings-equal-attitude mindset.
This is also why so many ships become so bland once they become the fandom's favorite hobby horse. The actual conflict gets sanded away because people don't want to deal with the complicated emotions (a la half of the content for the canon Transformers ships)
