Sticky: Underrated Anime (According To M Stardustrifle) Masterpost
Aug. 4th, 2023 05:28 pmHere's a list of anime that I think are underrated. This list is based around my own tastes and preferences. I might add to this list at any time.
(The Weeb Ass Shit scale ranks anime on three criteria. A high W, or "Weeb" score means that the show incorporates a lot of anime tropes or elements of Japanese culture that might be confusing to someone not familiar with them. A high A, or "Ass" score means that the show is high in fanservice or other sexual content. And a high S, or "Shit" means that I think that the show is high quality.)
Title: Shiki
Genre: Horror/Suspense/Supernatural
Episode Count: 22
W/A/S Score: W4, A3, S9.5
Elevator Pitch: In a small Japanese town, a mysterious plague starts sweeping the village, killing its inhabitants at alarming rates not long after a mysterious new family moves into the Western castle up on the mountain.
Unsurprisingly, it’s vampires.
This anime uses its large cast of characters and isolated setting to the fullest, showing us a variety of reactions to the supernatural menace, which really creates a sense of horror, showing how every possible response one could think of having is for naught, as the horror builds and builds before a crescendo of violence at the end where no one is innocent and no one is safe.
This is my current favorite anime.

Aug. 27th, 2026 08:46 pmi don't know if i've made this post before but two 50-somethings is not old man yaoi. two 40-somethings is not old man yaoi. when i become god-emperor of the universe i will incinerate everyone who has used the word "old man yaoi" to refer to any pairing where all of the members are not AT LEAST in their 60s

Aug. 26th, 2026 01:44 amWhat kinds of horror people are especially freaked out by is so interesting to me. Infohazards seriously freak my boyfriend out (the Boiled One Phenomenon really did a number on him), whereas for me, they’re firmly in the land of “fun scary” (even though I have OCD. Go figure.) I, meanwhile, can’t really handle jumpscares at all, while the aforementioned boyfriend is perfectly fine with them.
While we were both really into Internet-native horror stuff in our younger years, my nightmare fuel of choice was SCP, while he was obsessed with FNaF and other related jumpscare-heavy Let’s Play-bait games. It feels like a Chicken and the Egg scenario-did what we sought out at these times when our tastes were developing shape what we found scary, or did what we sought out or avoided stem from preexisting, dormant preferences?

Aug. 19th, 2026 11:51 amTrying to schedule my reduction is a nightmare because every single provider that I’ve talked to hears “trans” and “looking for breast surgery” and goes “all right, you want a full mastectomy” no matter how many fucking times I say “breast reduction” and “no, not mastectomy, breast reduction”. Fucking in one ear and out the other for them.
Maybe I should have stuck to the original plan of “pretend to be a cis lady who just wants a reduction for normal cis lady reasons”. Maybe then I’d get listened to.

My mother hates my father’s taste in music (80s rock/metal) so much, that she forbade him from playing any of the music he liked around me and my brother during our childhoods and instead played her own preferred pop/country exclusively.
Which is why it’s really hilarious that as I have grown into an adult, she has realized with dawning horror that my music tastes are very similar to that of my father’s.

i was fucking around on tiktok, looking at this account that makes (honestly pretty fun) lyric videos to vkei songs. i see one for the song belphegor by the gallo, and i'm like "oh this fucks, and the vocalist doesn't have Standard Vkei Voice! i should listen to more of their stuff!"
i decide to start with the album belphegor is from, tre diavolo, and upon seeing the album cover experience an emotion akin to being hit with a bus going 70 miles an hour.
"wow, okay" i think to myself, both shocked and intrigued, and decide to press play and jam to the first song, astaroth.
"huh, i wonder what he's singing about" i think, track down a fan translation of the lyrics, and upon reading the first line of the song i am immediately hit with another bus.

Finally gave in and paid for LJ Archivr, and after fighting a battle against my remarkable ability to break every piece of technology I encounter in new and exciting ways, I managed to grab about 26 thousand of the about 28 thousand posts on the comm, here's a link to the ZIP file, be warned that it is Large.

Currently poking around Jrock LJ in general, and oh Madoka have some of these fics aged poorly. I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Random antiblack caricatures for """humor""". Sex work AUs where every single character refers to the sex workers as "whores". Viewpoints on homosexuality ranging from the Ancient Greek to the Krafft-Ebing. Authors learning that Gackt is indigenous Okinawan and proceeding to get very "romance novels about Native American guys written in the 70s" levels of racist about that fact.* Bizarre and inordinate hatred towards the entire female gender. Not to argue that nowadays fandom is a completely woke paradise, but oh how things have changed.
(*Sadly, I have yet to see a fic that brings up Gackt being indigenous Okinawan without being racist about it, even with fics written now. I assume that this is a case where Gallant decides not to risk being offensive while Goofus strides ahead, confident in their utter lack of knowledge or sensitivity.)

Jrockhumor, similarly, has not aged well. Even in non-bigoted memes and jokes, a lot of the humor is very "I can haz cheeseburger cat", for lack of a better term. The only two times I actually laughed out loud when reading anything was at a joke about Kisaki's tax evasion (and this is probably because I just find tax evasion inherently funny) and someone's joke definition post saying "Visual kei: Japanese for 'transvestism and homosexuality'. Commonly mistaken for a music genre."
~*~
Another finding from Jrockhumor, this time from a "rules of J-rock fanfiction" post.
#35: Predisposition - It's no fun to make fan fiction about those who are openly gay... Thus the stunning lack of fanfiction about homo-trifecta SiSeN, Peggy, and Yo-oh...
Three thoughts crossed my mind in the exact moment I read this. The first was "wait peggy giggles is gay?" The second was "This post is truly of its time. If I was to make a similar joke nowadays, I'd bring up Ao Sakurai and Kaya, not these three." The third thought was "New discourse topic- is fandom predominantly choosing to write RPF about presumed-straight celebrities as opposed to openly gay ones a form of homophobia-"

(this is probably wrong because i avoid vkei twitter like the plague and don't use tiktok at all, but it's my experience from places like tumblr/pinterest/reddit/fan forums/ao3)
Type One: Malice Mizer-Heads and Adjacents:
- Their first vkei band is Malice Mizer, and it's usually their main love, but a lot of them do branch out into adjacent tanbi kei or more (relatively) chill kote kei bands over time.
- Wind up saying a lot of ignorant things, but generally very willing and eager to learn when corrected.
- Also usually into nostalgia for late-90s-2000s Japanese Goth Culture ("old-school lolita", "gothic" manga from that era", etc)
- The most likely out of all of these groups to write fanfiction/draw fanart/do "Transformative Fandom" stuff.
Type Two: The Menhera Kei Crowd:
- As the name suggests, fans of "menhera kei" bands (Kaneto Juusei, gulu gulu/I to Rito no Musuzokyu, Senketsu Ako-chan and Mamireta are the big ones)
- Wind up saying a lot of ignorant things, but in my personal experience, are more likely to get defensive and dig their heels in when corrected.
- Typically precisely as menhera as their faves are, which results in a lot of unfiltered social media crashouts, dumb callout posts, freakouts once they realize what their favorite songs are about, the whole shebang.
- At least they tend to make some pretty funny memes.
Type Three: The Honorary Oldhead
- Their natural habitat is the fandoms for okeshou/proto-visual/kurofuku kei bands (X Japan, Buck-Tick, I've seen them into Luna Sea, Soft Ballet, and Der Zibet, as well)
- Typically very chill, they like to do their research and reading and enjoy digging around old fansites.
- A lot of them wind up becoming Walking Encyclopedias of their Favorite Guy, which is very cute and endearing behavior.
- Some of them are obviously Very Young, but for quite a few of them you'll be chatting about stuff and then they offhandedly mention they're like 15 and you're like "what the fuck, what the fuck, you did not give off that vibe at all."

Gotten to late May of 2007 and it's vaguely unsettling feeling the effects of Strikethrough without any actual mention of what we now know was Strikethrough. "Because of the rumors about journals getting deleted, I'm friendslocking all of my fic." "I wanted this fic to be fluffier, but because of the thing with LJ, it turned out kind of angsty, sorry." Seeing that the last captures made of one particular BNF's fics to the Wayback Machine were all made in late May/early June of 2007.
That last one kind of gets me, honestly. It's just this sort of uncanny feeling of like, being so close to another fan who also cares deeply about preserving the things they love, and being able to guess at what they were feeling and that their feelings were similar to mine in a way. I want to make sure that this is safe so that LiveJournal won't be able to take it away from me. I understand. I understand, my fellow Committer of RPF Crimes. I'm pressing my hand in your fossilized handprint right now, in my mind.

Hella interesting post from August 2007 asking the comm a bunch of questions about their favorite pairings, including who the seme and uke are, why the seme and uke are the seme and uke, and if you could see them switching. The answers are fascinating.
Why do you think [the seme and uke are the seme and uke]? Reasoning?
"All depends on the personality. In short, as others have wrote, it should really be clear by that as to who's seme and who is uke."
"classic rules on yaoi; seme mention before uke, seme is older and taller than uke, and (usually) have darker hair than uke.>>> read it somewhere on mags ^.~"
(explaining why they ship switch) "Well they all have the same parts, and they're all men, therefore all with the same needs. It's a give-take relationship; sometimes one gives, sometimes takes."
"I don't believe in the seme/uke roles because it's not realistic that one would always top and one would always bottom. I only use Dominant/submissive roles when I write about BDSM relationships where it's natural."
"Well, generally I don't have an iron-set roles for people... Though, granted, some people just don't work as ukes/semes."
"I don't believe in strict uke/seme roles unless it's within the context of a BSDM relationship. In my fics they always switch, and I tend to prefer reading fids where they switch, too."
Is there a change [sic] for turning tables? Why shouldn't uke turn into seme for a while?
"They can, but they always seem to return to the original way afterwards. ^^"
"There are some I might take into consideration when playing with both roles however there are concrete pairings where I prefer one party be submissive throughout the relationship."
"honestly, personally, i dont like if uke turn into seme." [sic]
"I view 'uke' and 'seme' as simply a way to describe who's being fucked and who's fucking, not a concrete role."
"I prefer they do. I think in terms of a real relationship equality is a big part and not all men, especially in couples like KaoruxKyo, would want to bottom constantly. Even uke's [sic] need a power trip once in awhile."
"Honestly, I'd define any relationship in which the tables never turn as kind of abusive and think that the top was being pretty selfish."
"I love it when the "obvious" uke tops XD" (you and me both buster)
"Oh yes. I love when it's a fight for top. XD it's almost always amusing."

scissorssevered who tagged me!
Last Song: Kuwa no Hana by Kebyo. Listen. The Clown Man Fuckery has drained my soul to a point where I'm not sure I'm capable of positive emotions right now. I need to wallow in my misery for a bit, okay?
Currently Watching: Scavenger's Reign with my boyfriend. So good. So fucking good. I like weird alien environments and characters who are realistically terrible people.
Current Obsession: Fucking visual kei. Again. God help my soul.
Currently Reading: Nothing, sadly.
Currently Working On: Drawing up some OCs for a hypothetical "What if joseimuke app game, but visual kei and Actually Good?" idea/concept that's been rotating around in my head. Also, RPF Crimes, ft. My Icon, because shame is for losers.
Currently Wearing: An oversized Case Study of Vanitas T-shirt and underwear.
Last Search: "how to mute someone using reddit enhancement suite" Why, oh why, do people not realize that when I want to mute someone, I want them gone from my browsing experience. I do not want a clickable tab so that I can see them and click open and get flashbanged with Whatever I Muted Them For.
Favorite Flower: Red spider lillies.
Tagging anyone who wants to participate.

Jun. 27th, 2026 10:41 pmout of all of these vaguely described fic ideas, which should i concentrate on?
OPTION ONE: 🌹🥀 (extremely shameless pwp)
OPTION TWO: 🔪🎀 (is it a hs au if one of them already dropped out?)
OPTION THREE: 💪🪽(merry bad end post-apocalyptic vampire au multichap)
OPTION FOUR: 🍷🕷️ (unbelievably self-indulgent recursive fanfic)
OPTION FIVE: Do none of these, focus on prewriting for Kinktober 2026.
