potential ship hate and m failing theory of mind below the cut

i mean, kink tomato/SALS and all that, but looking at the relative popularity of renga to tadaai is like looking at someone give you the choice between a beautiful buffet, full of every kind of decadent dessert you could imagine, and a salad, and seeing basically everyone choose the salad option.

i mean, i like salad! it's perfectly fine! but wouldn't you rather have the infinite decadence of a full dessert buffet! one can not live on salad alone!

and to bring this back to shipping, i know that PREFERENCES exist but like.

why on earth would you devote most of your time to the fluffy friends-to-lovers pair of generically cute teenage boys and not the fucking childhood friends to bitter, angry master/servant to loving master/pet relationship where one half is yeah, kind of a Generic Dude, but the other half is a fucking Seme of Semes who's voiced by TAKEHITO. MOTHERFUCKING. KOYASU and the ship created the "Canon-Typical Pet Play" tag on ao3 and and and...

i just don't understand. i really just don't.

Do you want my uncharitable take on it?

As much as people talk about aspirational shipping, I think the real draw of bland-ass pretty people ships is comfort. Sometimes you don't want to think about what you're looking at, you just want to vicariously vibe. Thinking requires separating yourself from the text, and critical analysis is scary, especially from a feelings-equal-attitude mindset.

This is also why so many ships become so bland once they become the fandom's favorite hobby horse. The actual conflict gets sanded away because people don't want to deal with the complicated emotions (a la half of the content for the canon Transformers ships)
