Continue to be utterly fascinated by the phenomenon of characters in joseimuke/otome games that are like, The Gay Best Friend that You Can Date. Because psychosocially, I’d always sort of thought the popularity of the Gay Best Friend trope amongst straight women was as a sort of Safe Man, one who doesn’t desire you sexually and who you can therefore engage in a sexless friendship with*, so the popularity of these characters as objects of desire/LIs is fascinating to me.

*Or M’s mother could just be bonkers.

A number of straight women do consider gay men to be "safe" in a way. A number find the idea of being so sexually desirable that they can even convert the gays to be appealing.

I think some of the 'safety' comes from our rape culture; I've heard it is next to impossible for men and women to be 'just friends' because women have been accustomed to men expecting more from opposite sex friendships.
