Here's a list of anime that I think are underrated. This list is based around my own tastes and preferences. I might add to this list at any time.

(The Weeb Ass Shit scale ranks anime on three criteria. A high W, or "Weeb" score means that the show incorporates a lot of anime tropes or elements of Japanese culture that might be confusing to someone not familiar with them. A high A, or "Ass" score means that the show is high in fanservice or other sexual content. And a high S, or "Shit" means that I think that the show is high quality.)

Title: Shiki
Genre: Horror/Suspense/Supernatural
Episode Count: 22
W/A/S Score: W4, A3, S9.5
Elevator Pitch: In a small Japanese town, a mysterious plague starts sweeping the village, killing its inhabitants at alarming rates not long after a mysterious new family moves into the Western castle up on the mountain.

Unsurprisingly, it’s vampires.

This anime uses its large cast of characters and isolated setting to the fullest, showing us a variety of reactions to the supernatural menace, which really creates a sense of horror, showing how every possible response one could think of having is for naught, as the horror builds and builds before a crescendo of violence at the end where no one is innocent and no one is safe.

This is my current favorite anime.

I don’t think any creator will ever outdo Osamu Tezuka in terms of how utterly fucking crazymaking (to me) his treatment of Queer Stuff (tm) is, but Hideo Kojima is a close second.

I am currently awake at midnight trying to track down an sources for the “Metal Gear Solid 2 was the first game to say the word ‘bisexual’ claim” (there are none) and trying to find any possible leads to track down earlier possible usages (Phantasmagoria 2 and a few old indie games, at this point)

headcanoning/writing/truthing canon male characters as trans women is neither the Grand Anti-Patriarchal Antidote To Fandom Misogyny nor is it The Evil Crack Through Which Misogyny Will Grow And Poison Fandom Forever it is literally just a Fun Thing That Some People Do Because It Is Fun and the sooner everyone realizes this the sooner we can all move on with our lives and stop getting into stupid arguments

Fundamentally, there are two types of pairings that get called “toxic yaoi”. One of them is your standard abuse/hurt stuff where the toxicity exists within the bounds of the relationship, and like, the members of the relationship are the ones suffering. And then, there’s the other type of toxic yaoi where it’s like. These guys are wonderfully in love. They are thriving, personally. But not the people around them. The people around them are getting murdered and tortured and suffering. But the couple’s thriving! And they’re in love! And it’s good!

honestly kind of wondering what last-minute twist they'll pull to try to make us regret voting forgive for kazui, though honestly given the moral judgements i've seen on irl milgram (r/aita) there's a chance they're just gonna go with the Fandom Accepted Kazui Backstory

looking at how milgram has been going lately and wondering if my weird-ass take stemming from my weird-ass political views (milgram is about how retributive justice is inherently immoral) was actually like half right in terms of the ultimate message of the series. current thesis statement: milgram is about how the act of passing judgement is inherently immoral.

a complaint i've been hearing from a lot of people is that it currently seems like, with the backstories revealed, it's as if the writers are deliberately trying to make each vote seem like the "wrong" thing to do, and these writing decisions would make more sense if the message that was trying to be conveyed was that it is wrong to pass judgement at all, whether it is to forgive or not to forgive. this theme reverberates through a lot of the characters, whether it's shidou and yuno falling victim to the writers' bioconservatism judging certain kinds of "life" as more worthy than others, kotoko/fuuta/muu judging their victims, haruka's parents judged him, amane judges people through her cult, there's a lot of that sort of judging going on.

and we also judge. why do we judge? we judge because we're told to (and in milgram, too!), we judge because that's the whole premise this shit is based on. we judge, the characters judge, and none of this leads to good outcomes for anyone.

and this kind of ties back to the title of the whole thing- milgram. most people figured this title was referencing the milgram experiment's most famous takeaway (people will do awful shit if an authority figure tells them to), but taking all this together, i think there's another part to the title. what was the horrible act that the milgram experiments original revolved around? judging the performance of another person and punishing them for it.

- My ability to stick with my own ethical stances and maintain ideological consistency.

- I have a very good semantic memory.

- I've been told I'm good at Classpecting fictional characters and multiple of my friends find this very cool about me, which says more about my friends than me, probably.

If you are involved in English-speaking fandom, you are probably aware of Omegaverse. If you've been involved in English-speaking fandom for a decent time, you’re probably aware of Sentinelverse/Dom-sub-verse. But, what if you were to learn that these are just the tip of a massive iceberg of “verses”?

Yeah, Japanese-speaking fandom has been very busy crafting a fuckton of new “verses”, and adding interesting developments to some of ENG fandom’s old hits of yesteryear, creating a state that has been referred to as the “Verse Warring States Era”.

But, are the majority of these verses any good, as defined by my very specific and rigorous “do they appeal to Me, Specifically, and don’t just give me “we have Omegaverse at home” vibes?” Would I actually want to read an original story which centers around this verse? Would I want to put fictional characters which I like in it? Would I nut to it?

That is what this recurring series intends to find out. I will be going verse-by-verse, using the Pixiv Encyclopedia’s list of Omegaverse derivatives and other verses, summarizing and reviewing them according to my arbitrary and biased whims. If you can read Japanese (and maybe even if you can’t, I have no idea how well this stuff Google Translates) and you’re interested in a verse, I recommend reading the linked page in full instead of relying on my summary.

Without further ado, on with the first of what will hopefully be many reviews!

Omegaverse:

oh dear god do i really need to explain omegaverse to you all uhh it’s become so mainstream that it has a motherfucking wikipedia page

Anyways. I’m not explaining Omegaverse to you. I like Omegaverse. I think pregnancy and boypussy and gender essentialism and sex-pollen-adjacent stuff is hot and I’m not going to bullshit you by pretending that my enjoyment of this verse is because of some deeper social justice reason. That would be cringe.

Anyways, the Pixiv Encyclopedia article is hella interesting, because it kind of weaves a class conflict in with the Omegaverse that I don’t think a lot of English-speaking works do? Alphas as high-class, Betas as middle-class, and Omegas as lower-class, with inter-Alpha marriage presented as possible and not as horribly scandalous, in a sort of analogy to marriage within the upper classes? Interesting. Kind of like to see a hardcore deconstructionist thing that runs with this analogy. Heat suppressants as transhumanist anti-capitalist praxis.

The Pixiv Encyclopedia additionally seems to claim that studding/neutering is not very common in JPN spaces (and given the English names I’m inclined to agree with them) but this is actually the first time I’ve heard of them. Very cool ideas. Additionally, it reiterates that after an Omega is mated, they no longer release pheromones, which… I’m not sure how I feel about, honestly. Evolutionarily, it could be beneficial, but I just don’t like it. More possibility for #angst if it’s the opposite.

(it also claims to the best of my very poor japanese knowledge that the inspiration for the omegaverse was a werewolf episode in supernatural??? gell-man amnesia effect moment i guess)

(also even the pixiv encyclopedia page mentions the “yeah the original wolf research that this was based off of is bullshit lol” talking points so can people trying to make fun of omegaverse PLEASE choose something else to mock. article also gets extra points for linking Alphas, Betas, Omegas, A Primer, my second favorite Omegaverse meta)

RANKING: Omegaverse/10

Cakeverse:

Cakeverse! According to the Pixiv Encyclopedia, this one originated from South Korea, and there are two additional “genders”. Forks, who are exactly like normal humans except they have no sense of taste, and Cakes, who are exactly like normal humans except that they taste sweet. Really sweet. Like “so good even Forks can taste them” sweet.

You know where this is going.

(It doesn’t inherently have to be cannibalism! Cakes’ tears and saliva taste good, but, like, you’ve all had the experience of going “oh, I’ll just eat a little bit”, and then the whole plate is empty. You know where this is going to end up.)

This one is so fun!! So fun!! I love cannibalism and doomed relationships and deep aggressive repression of one’s own desires and a verse that revolves around an entirely different constellation of fetishes than Omegaverse! The one point against it that I have is that the name is entirely too cutesy for the subject matter, but that in itself is kind of a charm point, isn’t it?

I also love the fun beat where it’s mentioned that most of the time when normal people hear about Forks it’s in the context of sensationalized “cannibalism lust murder” stuff, which just causes more hiding and repression and yayyyyy that means M gets to use the fun metaphors! Fun. Very fun verse. M likey.

- I’m asking for it again, but an Italy For American Fanfic Authors guide, similar to the ones I’ve seen floating around for Great Britain/the UK.

- This is purely to sate my own curiosity, but a list of the first-person Japanese pronouns used by Jojo characters. I’ve been searching for this (in Japanese) and it has been shockingly hard to find!

- Recs for a specific genre of fanfic I like to call “Epistolary POV Outsider”, as in, fix that is primarily told through non-prose means (social media, newspaper articles, etc) and primarily focuses on the POV of those not involved.

- Nice meta!

Going to be doing this on multiple websites, because I've been splitting my time pretty heavily between a lot of them!

Pixiv:

To(ye)'s monster illustrations and the SCP-style worldbuilding surrounding them are all wonderful and I've really enjoyed slowly making my way through them as Japanese language practice.

🌟's GyJo illustrations are the cutest, silliest things ever and I love them so much.

Why one small American town won’t stop stoning its residents to death: or, as the tags elucidate, "Isaac Chotiner interviews the guy who runs the lottery in Shirley Jackson's 'The Lottery'".

#footscraygoose: Australian biosecurity laws and the Soulmate Goose of Enforcement trope collide in this epistolary fic.

YouTube:

What if Horror Mascots Were Period-Accurate?: Come for the redesigns, stay for learning about how Bendy from Bendy and the Ink Machine would have gotten fucked by the Hays Code.

The Bird Someone Has To Take When Your Aunt Dies: Technically only lightly fannish, but this made me laugh so hard I had to include it.

This one is going to be hard.

I was not very mentally well when I was younger, due to getting ass-fucked by both genetics and life circumstances, and there are two reasons that I made it past age 15. One of them is that I'm very pain-averse.

The other is fandom.

Reading fic gave me something to do besides "lie in bed and feel miserable" and "move through my life like a zombie", and it sort of helped me... unlock the ability to feel emotions? I don't know how to describe it, but I'm very much (and still am) a Robot Person, and experiencing emotions through fiction was, for a while, the only way I could actually feel things, so I dove headfirst into melodrama in order to actually have an outlet for the pain I was feeling at the time, but couldn't express.

Additionally, you know the suicide prevention strategy of "you can't kill yourself until X happens?" Yeah, that was a big thing for me. "You can't kill yourself until Eternal Summer comes out." "You can't kill yourself until Attack on Titan finishes." "You can't kill yourself until that fanfic you really like finishes." "You can't kill yourself until Hetalia stops coming out."

So, uh, thanks, fandom. Thanks for keeping me alive.

Because I don’t have any pets personally (on one hand I love cats, but I also love being able to display things on my bottom shelves,) I will be talking about pets from some works I enjoy that I feel like talking about.

Latte and Bakin- Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

I had to talk about a Jojo dog, given my fandoms, and while I could discuss all of them, I chose to focus my attention on two Spin-Off Dogs which I personally feel like don’t get nearly as much love as they should.

Bakin is the pet dog of mangaka Kishibe Rohan, appearing in the Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan spin-off manga and adaptations thereof, and is either a Lab or Golden Retriever depending on whether we’re talking about the manga or the live-action adaptation. In the typical fashion of those breeds, he seems to have the personality of an Absolute Angel, though in typical Jojo fashion, his first appearance involves him suffering horrific torment at the hands of an antagonist, though happily he survives and grows to adulthood and has escaped Spin-Off Jail (he briefly appears in the Jojolands, proving once and for all that Rohan is the only universal constant). Good for him, even if his adult proportions are a little jank. (Or perhaps he’s getting too many table scraps from Rohan…)

Now, even if you’re a hardcore Jojo fan, this might be the first time you’ve heard about Latte. Their* first (and so far, most likely only) appearance is in the short story Cioccolata Adotta un Cane (Cioccolata Adopts A Dog), where they, a German Shepard and former police dog, are adopted by the serial-torturer-killer-experiementer duo of Cioccolata and Secco after Cioccolata kills their owner. Cioccolata fucking loves Latte, but Secco is jealous that his position as Favorite Pet may be stolen. Eventually, Latte and Secco bond after Latte reveals that they can sniff out drugs, resulting in a fucking hilarious scene where Secco is petting Latte and Cioccolata is petting Secco.

While reading the summary, I was like “Latte is totally going to die, aren’t they? The authors have to explain why this dog never shows up in canon and this is Jojo. Dogs aren’t allowed to live in Jojo.” But nope! The story ends with Latte sitting and waiting for Cioccolata and Secco to come back from the fight where they canonically died, which might be even worse! I am now headcanoning that Giorno and Mista searched Cioccolata and Secco’s house and found Latte, and Mista adopted them. He seems like a good Dog Dad.

*The wiki calls Latte a he, the summary I read calls Latte a she, as someone with no access to the Japanese text I will just assume that Latte has no established gender in the text.

The Catcakes*- Honkai Star Rail

Now, these guys. I can not say anything intelligent or meaningful about them other than that they are cute and adorable and precious and I would die for them in a heartbeat. Introduced in the Critter Pick event as creations of Ruan Mei, The Best Character, they are weird little creatures that jiggle like Jello while looking cute and begging for their mother to not abandon them, which is futile as Ruan Mei graduated from the Victor Frankenstein School Of Science Parenting and gives zero shits about them, but that just leaves them up to be adopted by other characters in-universe and eventually take over the entire world.

*Canonically, they’re known as “critters”, but the whole fandom calls them catcakes because “critters” is stupid generic and “catcakes” is descriptive.

Hello to new mutuals and old mutuals alike! I go by M and all variations of my username alike, and the vast majority of my fandom activity is centered around Jojo's Bizarre Adventure at the moment, though I like a lot of things, mostly centered around otaku stuff.

If you're new here and want catchup on my specific brand of madness, I have taken the liberty of compiling what I believe to be the most important posts on my blog under the Memories tag greatest hits of the m. Most of them are untitled, so you'll never know what you'll get! Will I be elucidating my ethical stances? Will it be an insightful piece of meta? Will it be a well-thought out headcanon? Will it be a terrible headcanon? Spin the wheel and try it out!

Does anyone have ideas for the best way to get rid of an erotic doujinshi in the States besides just throwing it away (I would rather it eventually wind up with someone who actually wants it instead of in a landfill)

(If anyone on DW is in the mood for a cisfem!Abbacchio x teen!Bucciarati porn with plot doujin then that will most likely be my solution)

Towards the matter of Naoya Zen’in, one third of my brain is like “I want to see this fucker die graphically and painfully. I want to set him on fire myself. I will figure out a way to kill this 2-D cuntfuck with my own two hands if I have to” and then another third is like “I need this man to fuck me so bad it’s making me look stupid, misgender me harder pleeezzzzesses” and then the last third is just like “I have a suggestion.”
