those people who seem to make it their life's mission to make people who have a categorical attraction to aspects of neurodivergence that are commonly infantilized to feel great shame about their attractions should probably be considered ableists, not just in the abstract way in that they hold ableist beliefs, but because by spreading this shame amongst people who would be most attracted to us, they are actively making it harder for people with commonly-infantilized neurodivergences to enter happy relationships with people who would truly love us for who we are.

Mar. 4th, 2021 10:28 ami just keep thinking about maps (the jrock fanfiction) over and over again and especially kai's portrayal because i mostly brushed it off like oh, yeah, he's sort of Ambiguously Developmentally Disabled and so he's Pure and Innocent and so i was like yeah yeah yeah, okay, i don't care that much
and then i stumbled across starving dogs always bite- which has an Ambiguously Developmentally Disabled protagonist and he's both A: an actual human being with thoughts in his head and not just something that exists in the vicinity of the protagonists and B: a bitter little cunt who lashes out at his shitty life and the shitty people in it
and I LOVE THAT and it's made me so much more aware of how inadequate and infantilizing kai's portrayal is and i just Have Some Feelings
i might want to reread maps again but it's like 70 chapters and i don't have that kind of time

Dec. 28th, 2020 06:57 pmi genuinely think that there should be a word describing the thing that happens when
> a work with a character who, if they existed in the real world, would be considered disabled, gets popular
> someone points out to able-bodied fans that said character is, in fact, disabled
> said able-bodied fans blink like confused owls
"What? Do you mean that the character with (a) prosthetic limb(s) is disabled?
yes.
"No way! What about the one with a seeing-eye animal?"
yes.
"Seriously? What about the one who's semi-verbal, is only seen eating three different foods, and needs his friend to remind him to go to school in the morning?"
yes.
"Wow! What about the one who uses a crutch to walk and needs assistive tech to speak, read, and do math?"
YES.

now that i think about it, it makes sense that so many of the really virulent ableists in fe3h fandom love edelgard and hate dimitri. edelgard's ptsd is so watered down in order to preserve the nonthreatening waifu vibe she has going on for her. her "fear" of rats is treated as a cute moe quirk rather than a legit ptsd trigger and it's all downplayed just enough so that she isn't weird or scary or threatening while her fans can go bang on about how good representation she is
but dimtri
dimitri doesn't have studio mandate to make him into a waifu so he actually gets to be an interesting character, and he is! but he's also more Blatantly Crazy than edelgard. he talks to dead people. he hates himself to deeply unnerving degrees. he's mean and angry and bitter and doesn't have good hygiene and he pushes away all of his loved ones and he's unnerving and scary and offputting and i know this because he freaks a load of people out and that's why they scream on twitter about how he's the epitome of an abusive man or how killing him would be an act of community service
while they bang on about how edelgard is "good rep" because she's much more inherently likable and dimitri is "bad rep" because he freaks them out and they think that they're being Good and Woke when actually they only like mentally ill people with pretty, palatable symptoms.

Oct. 8th, 2020 04:27 pmI always get kind of upset whenever people bring up the "Eichi constantly waxes rhapsodic about Wataru's physical beauty" as a simple "Proof Eichi's totally gay for Wataru" thing because they're always just keeping the "Oh my god, Wataru is so beautiful, even the gods and angels yadda yadda yadda" bits and they always take out the "In contrast to MY disgusting disabled body, which is gross and weak and not even worthy of him and his splendor" bits.
It's just really important fucking characterization and I'm always pissed that they're just using it as LOL THEY GAY fodder.

m bitches about ableism, don't mind them
Mar. 8th, 2020 08:36 pmRanking my schools for their treatment of my migraines:
Elementary school: Got to lie down in the nurse's office, which was right next to the office and had lots of people going in and out. Also, fluorescent lights that I got yelled at for trying to turn off. Could only lay there for three hours at a time (my migraines usually last from six to eight hours), so I'd get sent back to class after three hours. "Massive, visually distorting migraines" apparently wasn't on the list for reasons why a kid could be sent home (it was only broken bones, vomiting, or fever), so after about two months of that Bullshit, my mom started teaching me how to make myself vomit. 0/10.
Middle school: Got an IEP in seventh grade, so I got to go to hide in the bathrooms if I thought I might be having a "panic attack" (meltdown). Also did this when I was having a migraine. Only a 5/10 because even though the lights were dim in the bathroom, it's still the stall of a bathroom in an American public school.
High school: Got to go lie down on the floor of the counselor's office when I had a migraine, which is marginally better than a bathroom stall, owing to the presence of carpet and lack of Loud People, but it's still the floor of someone's office. 6/10.
TLDR: All schools should have sensory rooms that any student can go to for any reason. And I do mean all schools. "Most people with migraines don't get them until puberty" my ass, I had my first migraine/sensory meltdown when I was in preschool.
