Does the "distract the child/lie to the child about how much things are going to hurt" actually work on NT kids? Or is it just the kind of thing that doctors keep doing because they THINK it works?

I finally got around to watching Super Eyepatch Wolf's Shenmue 3 video in full and when they got to the part where they showed the Big Bad, I basically spent the whole next few minutes with "Oh god, he's hot" playing on my brain in repeat, like a parody of myself.
