I read a fanfic based around transplanting some Vtubers to the Titanic and having them do yaoi and then die and quite liked it. As opposed to most fanfics based around historic tragedies, which I find to be rather tasteless, I don't find fics centered around the Titanic to be in poor taste. If one would ask me, I'd mostly crack this reaction up to how long ago the tragedy took place- every survivor is now dead, and most of their direct family, as well.
Later, I watched that Fascinating Horror video on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, and because this is where my brain goes, I thought; Hmm, if someone wrote fanfic set during the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, I'd find that pretty tasteless. And I'm trying to find out why my reactions are so different.
It can't be because of distance from the event, because both of these tragedies took place within a couple years of each other. And it can't be the "English-speaking person writing about another country's tragedies" response, because both of these tragedies were, by and large, Anglosphere tragedies.
Perhaps it's overexposure? I've known about the Titanic film from a very young age, and as such the idea of "Titanic love story" is sort of in the foundation of my brain and my thinking and therefore I may think of the idea of "Titanic love story" as being normal, but the idea of "Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire love story" as being not normal, and therefore activating the alarm bells in my head.
Any more ideas?
