So... I just saw Detective Pikachu yesterday.
Spoilers under the cut.
Things I Liked:
> All the fanservice for fans of the franchise. I mean, they canonized "Holy mother of Arceus". What more could you want?
> The Pokemon are Really Fucking Cute. They don't look like they don't belong in the environments *coughcoughSonic* They look like Actual Animals while still being recognizable as the Pokemon.
> "I've been stuck making listicles; Top Ten Cutest Pokemon. Trick question, they're all cute!"
> No explanation. I just really liked that line.
> I thought Justice Smith did a really good job.
> I loved the Ditto twist. Like Jesus Christ, if you heard someone squealing in a theater in NC yesterday when that twist was revealed, I'm sorry, but I just thought it was cool.
> Ryan Reynolds is funny. I don't think I needed to say that, but whatever.
> The climax is, in as Digibro described it, "batshit insane". It's just Very Indescribable and I loved every minute of it.
> Psyduck for president.
Things I Didn't Like:
> The villain is painfully obvious as the villain and yet another Evil Transhumanist.
> The female lead's acting is...just...crappy. It's overdramatic and she sounds like she's reading lines off of a script, with barely any attempts at emotion. Her Psyduck was better acted then her, honestly.
> The plot still suffers from the main problem that video game movies have, which is that the plot just seems to be pulling around the characters and it follows the "Go here. Do a thing. Get information. Proceed to the next step." thing that honestly feels like a holdover from the original adventure game format.
> The first...like...fourth or fifth of the movie feels rushed. They needed a bit more time to set up Tim as a character and his relationship with his father in my eyes.
So...Did I like it? Solid 7/10 in my eyes. I had a smile on my face as I walked out of the theater, and I kind of want to rewatch it.
