Snowflake Challenge 2026-5: Wishlist

stardust_rifle- I’m asking for it again, but an Italy For American Fanfic Authors guide, similar to the ones I’ve seen floating around for Great Britain/the UK.
- This is purely to sate my own curiosity, but a list of the first-person Japanese pronouns used by Jojo characters. I’ve been searching for this (in Japanese) and it has been shockingly hard to find!
- Recs for a specific genre of fanfic I like to call “Epistolary POV Outsider”, as in, fix that is primarily told through non-prose means (social media, newspaper articles, etc) and primarily focuses on the POV of those not involved.
- Nice meta!

Date: 2026-01-09 08:42 pm (UTC)So, age of consent in Italy is 14. There are a few exceptions. If the two people having sex are related, they live together for whatever reason, one has some sort of duty of care towards the other (for example, if the adult is a teacher), then age of consent is 16. If both parties are minors, then the age of consent is 13.

Date: 2026-01-09 08:50 pm (UTC)As for age gaps and how acceptable they are, I feel like there's no one-size-fit-all sort of answer. Perhaps if you give me a bit more context? As a general rule, Italy is sadly very conservative. We're a culturally Catholic country and we have the pope literally in our backyard, so this plays an influence.
Italy is still pretty sexist, so the gender of the people involved will matter too. I think that most people won't find a big age gap between an older man and a younger woman very troubling, while the opposite will raise more than a few eyebrows.

Date: 2026-01-09 09:19 pm (UTC)We're talking about a story set in present day? As I said, I think that an older guy and younger girl would be less criticised than the reverse. Older people wouldn't find it disturbing, even. Still, I have a 12-year-old daughter and if she were 15 and I found out she was going out with a 21-year-old I'd be very concerned if not outright horrified. The power/life experience imbalance would be too great. Most people in my circle would think the same (University-educated people living in a big city in Northern Italy, I mean). I'm generalising here, this is stereotypical talk so take it with a grain of salt, but people from Naples are usually more religious and also they tend to get married/get into serious relationships much earlier than here in the north, so if the relationship was done the 'traditional' way with the two families involved, it would be more easily accepted. Sorry, I don't think I'm very helpful.

Date: 2026-01-09 09:33 pm (UTC)Talking out loud here, but if I were writing a story about the couple you mentioned in Napes in 2000, I'd be sure to include the family/immediate community being scandalised that the girl is having pre-marital sex at all, like, regardless of the boyfriend's age, at least initially. Then if the couple were determined and the boy, said, had a stable job or you know was wealthy somehow, and he decided to go tell the family that he has serious intentions then eventually the family and the village, so to speak, would come around. The guy's family would probably be much more relaxed about it, a father might brush off the whole thing with a 'just don't get her pregnant' and/or even be proud of their son for snapping up a pretty young thing, ugh. :(
