Aug. 14th, 2019 05:59 pmSo, I've finally gotten around to reading Maps, and I'm of two minds to it.
On the one hand, it certainly falls into some traps of Mental Hospital AUs, oversimplifying mental illnesses and their causes to simple old Freudian claptrap.
On the other hand, it seems to be avoiding the "scary schizo psychopath" trope. Shinya's downright harmless (though of course, he fits right into the Ophelia archetype) and Kyo's being portrayed as the primary victim of his own mental illness.
Of course, this could all change, I'm only about a fourth of the way in the first "book" of the "series", but I think I'll continue to like it as long as the writing style stays consistently good and it doesn't do something terribly offensive.

You know the chances of you finding anything good are minuscule and the only thing you'll walk away with is resolve to finish your fic, disappointment in the lack of good fics, and increased love for the AO3.
