to this day i still don't get it. if women's jeans suck then why don't you just wear mens?

I remembered one time when I heard some of my female relatives complaining about how terrible shopping for women's clothes was, and then I asked them why they didn't just shop in the men's section instead.

They all looked at me like I'd just sprouted a second head.

the first thing about the "is it okay to remove/alter/change ~~~offensive~~~ stuff in translation" is that there's kind of a sliding scale between changing a few lines so you don't refer to a brown character as "a monster" and completely rewriting an entire character's personality because he was ~~a bad stereotype of bisexuals uwu~~

the second thing is that basically nothing will clearly fall into those two camps of "probably okay, it doesn't really have a massive impact so it's okay to change" or "DON'T FUCKING REWRITE AN ENTIRE CHARACTER'S PERSONALITY BECAUSE YOU DON'T LIKE IT"*

*especially when the whole point of this character is "i'm BROKEN and DAMAGED and also happen to be bi, so i play up the stereotype of a depraved dangerous bisexual deliberately to push people away". IS how did you miss the point this bad?

(there is also the related issue of "when is it okay to make the romance scenes in otome games seem less dubcon-y", where my brain goes "if it's a case where to japanese eyes it reads as consensual and to western eyes it reads as dubcon, then it's probably okay to make it seem more consensual, but if you're supposed to be kinking on the dubcon, then changing it is probably shooting yourself in the foot."

but again, i understand that in most cases that kind of thing is hard to tell.)
