I was writing about the Vampire Council in Splintered Silver and their motivations, and then I just realized that I was basically just dividing them into whether I personally found these characters scary.
I can, personally, understand why I find SS!REDACTED FOR SPOILER REASONS scary. He's a manipulative narcissistic rapist who's life goals revolve around kidnapping random men, brainwashing them into believing that they're his lovers, and desperately hunting down and recapturing these men when the brainwashing inevitably breaks, because he's so self-deluded that he can't realize that his lover's death was his own damn fault.
This is more realistic than the other Council members, who have motivations like "preserve the vampire race indefinitely because they're the only ones who even have a chance at understanding me and I'll do whatever it takes, including slavery and child murder" and "desperately grab at power in an attempt to never, ever, be hurt again, never realizing that I'm doing exactly what was done to me", and "just fucking have fun, only I view the world and all of the people in it the same way a /tg/ denizen views your average game of D&D", and other such motivations, ranging from the vaguely paternalistic to the apathetic.
None of these even come close to scaring me as much as SS!Redacted, with the exception of the last one.
I really don't know why this is.
