i need You People (general you) to realize that sexual assault/harassment isn’t some uniquely depraved horrifying disgusting Thing that you need to be uniquely fucked up to even think about happening but rather just a Bad Thing That Happens To People Sometimes (yes, real people! who exist!) and as such it is not unusual or a perverted indulgence to depict it in fiction or hypothesize about it happening on the edges of canon

Reminds me of this post you and I were talking on quite a while ago: https://scissorsevered.dreamwidth.org/37082.html

My rationalization of their idea is that "Sex is highly personal to many people, therefore sexual assault is not only physically violent but is a massive violation of a part of their identity," but that still doesn't excuse their ridiculous ideas on morality.

And it treats survivors like they're permanent victims and that they can never recover from anything, so they might as well just keel over and die.

UGH, people.

Folks in the Anglosphere and especially the US have this messed up relationship to sex in general, where it's uniquely disgusting but also very important, and so they treat sex crimes as so much worse than other ones, even though there's nothing inherently worse about being slapped on the butt vs the face.

Back to the main point here, I've noticed that a lot of fictional work kinda... glosses over the existence of abuse survivors in general. Like they might sometimes acknowledge that yeah, people abuse each other, but certainly not any of our protagonists and definitely not onscreen! It's deeply alienating.

Yeah most of the people I know, and everyone I consider a friend, is a survivor of SOMETHING, and often of more than one type of abuse from more than one person/group. And yet... I can think of very few works that depict this. (And when they do it's often either glossed over as Normal And Fine, Actually, or dealt with in trauma porny ways. "This happened and here's a reasonable depiction of the consequences" or "yeah this happened but the character has already reckoned with it and moved on" are both rare.)
