Feeling a lot more confident and happier now that Narumi also showed up. It's surprising how much easier I find it to write such a little clown of a character.

...perhaps because I, too, was actually a clown all along? đŸ˜źđŸ€Ą

Warm as life | Kaijuu No. 8 | Kafka/Reno/Narumi, Reno/Iharu, Kafka/Hoshina | 3.8k words (WIP, 2/7) | rated M

Summary: The new threat posed by No. 9 weighs heavily on everyone. Under these circumstances, emotions run high and what starts as a way of relieving stress can easily bloom into unexpected feelings. Some people find that easier to admit than others.

Read it on Dreamwidth or AO3.

Midorikawa Kata (1872-1962)

Midorikawa Kata was born in 1872 (or maybe 1869?) in Tottori, where her father was a samurai retainer; her maiden name was Wada, and after her father led a failed rebellion she was adopted as a baby by the Hori family, of similar rank. At age fifteen, she began to study Chinese classics and etiquette at the local temple in order to prepare for marriage. The following year, she married Miki Setsujiro, son of a local banker. She was seventeen when her first son, Masao, was born, and twenty when his brother Tsutomu appeared.

In 1895, aged twenty-three, she divorced Setsujiro on account of his infidelity and went to Tokyo, taking Tsutomu with her. She was escorted en route by seventeen-year-old Midorikawa Kikuo, on his way to enter university. In Tokyo, she consigned Tsutomu to his father’s family and entered the nursing school affiliated with Tokyo Imperial University, where she was also baptized. She graduated in 1897; although her good grades led to a suggestion of studying in Germany, she worked as a visiting nurse for five years and then went to Hokkaido to marry Kikuo, who was working as a journalist in Otaru, writing pacifist and anti-authoritarian editorials protesting offenses against the Ainu as well as the Ashio Copper Mine problem; he spent the rest of his life on the authorities’ list of left-wing suspicious characters, followed by policemen.

Now with a son and three daughters, they returned to Tokyo in 1908, where Kata worked as a nurse while raising her children; her income was sometimes all the family had during the periods when Kikuo’s left-wing views put him out of work. In 1919, she learned about Mrs. Pankhurst and the women’s temperance movement in the UK from Kikuo while he was working there, and set up a Tokyo branch on her own. In 1925, she established a Women’s Suffrage League, arguing for women’s rights from the housewife’s perspective, and submitting petitions on women’s suffrage and women’s rights in general to the Imperial Diet. In 1927 she founded the Women’s Rights Protection Association, issuing the journal Joken [Women’s Rights].

Kikuo died in 1934. In 1945, when Kata was seventy-three, women’s suffrage became a reality. She died in 1962 at the age of ninety, still fighting the Japan-US Security Treaty of 1960.

Between Kikuo, her children from both marriages, and Kata herself, they had a remarkably wide circle of notable friends, colleagues, and relatives. Her oldest son Masao, better known as the poet Miki Rofu, was part of the “Akai Tori [Red Bird]” children’s literature movement and well acquainted with Yamada Kosaku (Tsuneko Gauntlett’s brother); her son Michio, a movie cameraman, taught Ozu Yasujiro his trade, while her daughter Yoshiko was married to the director Uchida Tomu and their son was Uchida Issaku (known for directing the Kamen Rider movies). Sumiko, the oldest daughter, worked in broadcasting for NHK along with her husband; Kunie, daughter number two, was an academic, and Kiyo, the youngest, became director of Japan’s first facility for multiply disabled children. Kikuo’s professional and political life brought him into contact at varying points with the poet Ishikawa Takuboku (husband of Setsuko), the author Kobayashi Takiji, the revolutionaries Kotoku Shusui (lover of Kanno Suga) and Sakai Toshihiko, and the politician Hara Kei (husband of Sadako and Asa). Kata herself became involved, through her women’s rights activism, with Hiratsuka Raicho, Ichikawa Fusae, Yosano Akiko, and Nishikawa Fumiko among others.

What better way to kickstart my journal with participating in this year's[community profile] snowflake_challenge!

two log cabins with snow on the roofs in a wintery forest the text snowflake challenge january 1 - 31 in white cursive text

The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

Hello and nice to meet you! You can call me Cherie and I go with she/her pronouns. I recently created a dreamwidth account about two weeks ago and quietly exploring the communities filled me with a sense of joy and inspiration seeing fannish interests and fandom celebrated this way.

A little bit of fandom background: I can recall my early days interacting with fandom communities in roleplay forums and the heydays of Livejournal until I eventually moved to Tumblr, spending hours making gif and photosets of my favorite characters. Over time I got more settled in Twitter just until it became... whatever it is today. Unfortunately, my past experiences of fandom in Twitter had heavily dampened how I viewed my interests and how I haven't been really enjoying/engaging with them the way I used to, and how sanitized everything seemed to be. I have been chasing that high of how much I had fun during my Livejournal days for quite a long time now. And so, this is me, at 28, coming full circle and returning back to my digital roots of being unapologetically, unabashedly cringe and Totally Normal about my current and hibernating fandoms, favorite characters and ships.

I'm doing this challenge to put myself out there, hoping to meet like-minded people who enjoy the same things as I do.

Just a few points I'll throw in here that might interest others who will read this entry:
  • I'd like to think of myself as a fanfic writer, even though I have only posted 3 so far... but I do have a lot of plot bunnies and works in progress which are currently not seeing the light beyond my writing program
  • I'm quite active in Hoyoverse games (Genshin, Honkai: Star Rail) and I'm always down to discuss the juicy, juicy lore and character dynamics
  • I love female protagonists in my joseimuke (Anzu, Izumi, Tsumugi) and I always see them as a whole separate character rather than a self-insert so you bet I'll love her much much more than the male cast lmfao
  • I'm currently learning japanese language and dabbling in a bit of translation when I have the time
  • I'm a pretty sappy and romantic person in general; romance in all forms hits me right in the core
  • Even if we don't share interests, I love learning other people's fandoms even through osmosis and it's enough to get me interested as well! I have so many ships-in-law from my friends because of this.
I'll try to keep up throughout the challenge but this is a good start!

In winter
    all the singing is in
      the tops of the trees
        where the wind-bird

with its white eyes
    shoves and pushes
      among the branches.
        Like any of us

he wants to go to sleep,
    but he's restless—
      he has an idea,
        and slowly it unfolds

from under his beating wings
as long as he stays awake.
But his big, round music, after all,
        is too breathy to last.

So, it's over.
    In the pine-crown
      he makes his nest,
        he's done all he can.

I don't know the name of this bird,
I only imagine his glittering beak
      tucked in a white wing
        while the clouds—

which he has summoned
    from the north—
      which he has taught
        to be mild, and silent—

thicken, and begin to fall
    into the world below
      like stars, or the feathers
        of some unimaginable bird

that loves us,
that is asleep now, and silent—
      that has turned itself
        into snow.

Challenge #1 - The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.
Hello everyone! My name is Kia and I've been on dreamwidth for almost an entire year (since April to be exact). I was originally active on tumblr (had a decent-ish following too), but because of the staff cuts in early 2025 I fled here and it's been my home ever since. I'm participating in this challenge 'cause I want to connect with the wider dreamwidth community. I've been doing addme posts and have found some journals through the interest search, but it feels like there's some journals/potential friends that I'm missing out on. So I'm just trying to put myself out there and hopefully find some journals to follow in the process (I'm gonna look through the comments of each challenge as much as humanly possible). I've been looking forward to this challenge ever since I found it, so I want to join for the experience at least.

What have you been working on and how are things going? Found any cool resources to share? Or just want to say hi?
malymin: Duck from Princess Tutu, as a duck. (duck)
[personal profile] malymin posting in [community profile] betaplease

Fandom: Princess Tutu

Characters/Pairings: Mytho and Rue.

Rating & Warnings: Unrated. Not entirely sure what warnings to put on it (may need help with that too), would probably consider it rated Teen at the moment. There's some themes of unreality and depersonalization, at least.

Estimated Fic Length: Currently at 5,889. Not sure how much longer it will end up being.

Notes: This started as a series of post-canon oneshots and twoshots with shared continuity and themes published on Cohost. Before Cohost shut down, it was strung together hastily into three fic entries and posted on Ao3 without proper forethought - I regret not asking a beta reader for input at the time. Need input on overall structure and on how the published chapters "come across" in characterization and tone. Particularly need input on the fic within the series labeled "Magpie," as I'm less confident in its function as a cohesive whole than "Glamour."

Thematically, I'm trying to explore the potential complications of Rue and Mytho's "happily ever after" - ways that they could struggle to fit inside the story-world, that old traumas could cause strain on their marriage, etc. I'm more interested in writing a "messy" or "toxic" relationship (with individual fluffy moments) than a wholesome happy ending here, so keep that in mind.

A few potential new chapters have been drafted for months now, but I've been holding off on publishing them because I want to "clean up" the existing fic - may ask for input on them later.

Starting off my Fannish 50 with a niche media recommendation! Let me tell you about a visual novel called Pine Point; Insomniac... I'll start with the game's official premise blurb:

You’re Nil.

Fishing at Lost Lake, trashing the popular kids’ cars, and playing in your shitty garage band are all things you’d rather be doing than working a dead-end job that will probably keep you trapped in Pine Point for the rest of your life.

Fortunately, you get to work alongside your best friend, Dimitri. Unfortunately, Dimitri is leaving town at the end of the summer… and you’re not.

[community profile] moodthemeinayear is now open for 2026!

Have you ever wanted to create a custom mood theme, but found yourself overwhelmed by all of the potential moods you'd have to make? Mood Theme in a Year has you covered! The community assigns three moods a week for you to design graphics for, with regular week long breaks. Draw, screencap, and/or animate your way to the custom mood theme of your dreams, with a community by your side to support and encourage you.

Not up for a full year/132 images? No problem! That's just the Maximum Track, which runs from January 1st through (roughly) the end of the year. If you want to make a smaller mood theme, you can follow the Minimum Track (18 images) or the Medium Track (34 images), or maybe somewhere between one of those and the Maximum Track. The goal of this community is to create a custom mood theme that you like, at a pace that works for you.

For those who missed it: While uploading and using a custom mood theme is restricted to paid accounts, as of December 2025, creating at least 18 mood graphics can earn you Dreamwidth points! Now, even if a paid account is out of your budget, you can still have the chance to upload and use your own custom mood theme. Read this post for more details.

The first three moods of 2026 are now up; thanks for reading, and I hope to see you there!

[site community profile] dw_maintenance reports in this post that imports from LiveJournal may be slow.  Russia has altered the terms of LiveJournal again in ways that may shut out many users.

Regrettably, Dreamwidth does not offer a way to sort posts by language so that people can choose to view the one(s) they speak and turn off what they don't.  I have found very few communities with a language focus, but they are listed here.

And we're back: Welcome to Mood Theme in a Year 2026! Whether you're here for the Maximum Track, the Medium Track, the Minimum Track, or just to watch and cheer along, I'm glad you're here ♄ I hope you have a good time!

This week's moods are: Angry, Awake, Confused

The next six weeks are the only ones where the moods are the same for all three tracks, so it's pretty special! I hope everyone has fun with it.

Anyway! What are you working on? Are you making a mood theme of any size, working on a different art project, or just here to follow the fun? What medium are you working in? Is there anything you're looking forward to? Let's talk about it!
