While I think a lot of antishipper morality in fandom spaces would have probably wound up the same no matter which ship war was the Inciting Incident, I genuinely believe that there wouldn't be the focus on "family-coded" "pseudo-incest" bonkers bullshit were it not for the attempts to push Broganes to argue that Sheith was incest.

"Family coded" is so weird to me. First of all, a lot of "family coding" is either "romance foreshadowing" or "normal healthy supportive friendship stuff" because? I guess? Antis believe that you shouldn't be close to or like your friends?

Also, a committed partner SHOULD be family, emotionally if not necessarily legally. TBH most people have had "friends who are basically family" too. Including "friends who are basically family and then they started dating"!

The definition of family-coding is always left intentionally vague so that people can spin it into their own narrative that they can control. As for antis view of friendship, I genuinely think this idea spread around because a lot of antis just don't have friends lmao.

I suspect that a lot of their friendships are based on simultaneous codependence and a willingness to drop people at a moment's notice (based on what I saw of Tumblr anti culture, and how they treat everything else in their lives), and constant policing of each other.

As for "family coded", thinking about it, I think it boils down to antis going "incest is bad because it's gross" and then using that as an excuse to malign ships they dislike/that make them feel bad... rather than putting half a brain cell into it and realizing incest is bad because of the abuse of power that it comes with. (And then panopticon-ing and purity culture-ing their way to "fictional depictions of bad stuff are just as bad as actually doing it.)
