stardust_rifleFor my list, I’m talking about the five female characters I spent the most time thinking about in 2023! Probably. This list isn’t, like, objective or anything. Oshi no Ko and Steel Ball Run spoilers below the cut.
5: Ayako, Diabolik Lovers AU (one of my OCs)
Okay she counts. She counts even though she's one of my children. She's a mentally and chronically ill Disaster Bitch who makes terrible decisions and stans Kou Mukami. She tried to murder one of her best friends for hooking up with Kou except she's too bad at murder to actually do anything so she just gets sent to the Shadow Realm. Her boyfriend negatively compares her to his gacha waifus. I utterly adore writing about her making terrible decisions and then spending hours justifying them to herself and making everything worse for everyone.
4: Ruan Mei, Honkai Star Rail
Okay, I was looking at Ruan Mei like "oh she's an Elegant Traditional Chinese Beauty" and not really caring, and then I played through her character quest, in which she tries to grow an alien demigod in her friend's basement without informing said friend, fucks up, and mind-controls the protagonist into fixing her fuckup and also not telling anyone about it, and then I played through the event, where she ignores the mewling of her adorable kitten science-children because she has Work to do and she cares not for you. Who has time for being a science parent when she's researching the best means to ascend to godhood?
She's great. I support women's wrongs. Everyone who complained about her not being a protag-kun dickrider are weak pathetic bitches who will not survive the winter. Let her vivisect someone.
3: Ai Hoshino, Oshi no Ko
okay here's my pitch. what if we took the basic character concept of sayaka maizono, made her way more fucked up, and put her in a story that was actually interested in exploring her point of view? And then they made one of the best Girl Who Haunts The Narrative Ever. Ai Hoshino fundamentally can't connect to or feel empathy for others due to her own abusive childhood (m starts screaming in the background) and despite this she becomes an idol and lies to everyone. Nothing but lying and masks all the way down, until she has kids, and for the first time in her life, she feels a bond with them, but she's terrified that if she ever says "I love you" to them, then she'll realize it's a lie (m is screaming even louder) AND THEN SHE DIES IN HER CHILD'S ARMS SAYING "I LOVE YOU" TO THEM AND REALIZES IT WASN'T A LIE (m's screaming is tempered with incoherent crying)
Anyways she's great. I've said this before but I love liars, I love fake bitches, I love Narrative Dead Girls, I love low-empathy girlies and abuse survivors who fundamentally can't connect to most people. I can't wait to learn more about her in Season 2.
2: Hot Pants; Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Araki, thank you for creating a crossdressing guilt-ridden nun who killed her brother in the best Part of your manga. My transness, emotionally fraught relationship with the Catholic Church, and deeply antagonistic relationship with my own younger brother thank you. Anyways she's got so many Issues and Catholic Guilt but she's also kind of an abrasive asshole who gives zero fucks about anything besides Her Mission. And also the crossdressing. I'm looking at every artist who gives her muscles and a strong jaw and saluting them. Anyway, HP, you're the best female character Araki ever wrote, sorry that your name makes it impossible to search you on socmed without getting inundated with softcore porn, that people have reduced you to "lol she pegs Diego/has all the brain cells" in their shitty fanfiction, and that you got the most undignified death of all the heroes.
1: Jingliu; Honkai Star Rail
Funny story- I didn’t have any interest in her until I played through the High-Cloud Quintet quest, whereupon I was like HOLY SHIT SHE’S SO SAD AND REMORSEFUL AND MURDERY AND A WALKING CORPSE I LOVE HER WHERE DO I PULL. And then I impulse pulled. (Don’t do that, kids.) And then I read all her character stories eight billion times. And then I cried over her. And then I defended her to people on the Internet. (me: Yes, I know she tortured Blade for over a hundred years by killing him over and over again, but have you considered that she's a sad wet kitten and I love her?)
me, at 3am: AND THEN A LIVING PLANET ATE HER ENTIRE FAMILY AND SHE WAS FORCED TO BE A SOLDIER IN AN ENDLESS HELLWAR AND THEN SHE FOUND FAMILY BUT ONE OF HER FOUND FAMILY MEMBERS DIED AND THEN HER OTHER FOUND FAMILY MEMBERS TRIED TO RESURRECT THE DEAD ONE BUT THEY TURNED HER INTO A HORRIFYING MONSTER AND JINGLIU HAD TO KILL HER AND NOW SHE'S WANDERING THE UNIVERSE MURDERING A MILLION TRILLION PEOPLE BECAUSE SHE'S IRREVERSIBLY INSANE AND HER STORY QUEST IS GOING AROUND DOING FUN STUFF ON THE LUOFU BEFORE SHE TURNS HERSELF IN FOR HER CRIMES-
I love her. I would kill for her. I would die for her. I can fix her, I know I can.
