stardust_riflewriting an "idol anime; a history" thing will have you being like "does an idol anime have to star idols? and can an anime star idols and not be an 'idol anime'?"
(because, like, you can draw a straight line of descent from idolmaster---->utapri---->utapri descendants---->hypmic, where obviously hypmic does not star idols, but you can obviously see the shared influences and tropes and the "we, king records, are encouraging our audience to relate to these characters as they would IRL idols" thing, whereas something like perfect blue may star idols, but is fully outside that chain of descent and any attempt to analyze it through that lens will result in some truly bonkers conclusions)

Date: 2026-02-22 09:57 pm (UTC)when I started looking at genres as (the output of) communities instead of subject matter checkboxes, it really changed how I navigated them. magic+girl doesn't mean "magical girl," sometimes a golf anime can be mecha, etc.
