Oct. 13th, 2024 10:50 pmI made a post, eight million years ago, about how Bachira, Kunigami, and Anri are probably the only pronoun respecters in the entire cast of Blue Lock. Now, having watched the first episode of S2, I feel the need to elaborate!
(am anime-only, will not be discussing the new charas besides shidou b/c i am an anime-only and don’t have a good handle on their personalities. also if i didn’t talk about someone just assume it’s because i would have just said “they hold normie-transphobic views stemming from normie cis views of gender that they haven’t had any reason to challenge” and i didn’t want to type that eight million times)
Isagi started out as very kind of underlyingly transphobic but respecting pronouns if it would cause less social friction. However, his increasing egotism means that he’s more willing to speak his mind about things. Even if it is misgendering.
Bachira is the kind of autist who doesn’t really comprehend gender, and his own gender identity can be best summed up as “shrug, accompanied by wavy hand motion”. Trans people’s genders are precisely as confusing as cis people’s genders to him, therefore he is a pronoun respecter.
Kunigami Pronoun respecter in the “cis LGB trans ally” way. Part of heroism is being a hero for everyone, after all.
The existence of trans people causes Chigiri to experience a variety of deeply unpleasant emotions, particularly related to his own gender nonconformity and past experiences regarding that. (even in anime-land being so GNC in the highly masculine environment of sports couldn’t have been easy…) He believes that these emotions are somehow the fault of trans people for existing. Has unironically said the phrase “femboy erasure”.
Barou is deeply invested in traditional masculinity and that’s where his transphobic beliefs stem from. Perhaps he would be a pronoun respecter if he gained respect for a trans person on an individual basis?
Ego is the kind of rationalist-transphobic who’s like “gender roles exist for delineating the different biological roles men and women play in society, it’s illogical to treat someone like a different gender just because they WANT to be treated like a different gender, that’s not how LANGUAGE works!” Has unironically said the phrase “biological pronouns/name.”
Anri is a pronoun respecter in the Nice Cis Lady Ally sort of way where she still has underlying unease about the Trans Thing but has realized it’s Not Polite to say those things out loud. Goes “even if you don’t believe trans people are real, it’s just rude to deliberately misgender them!”
Gin is the kind of cis-by-default autist who just can’t comprehend the concept of having a gender identity that doesn’t align with your birth sex and gets stuck on it for a while before getting distracted by something else, but has to go through the same whole song and dance every single time, therefore, he is not a pronoun respecter because the concept of being trans confuses him. Same for Zantetsu, except he’s just plain old cis.
Aryu has shrimp color transphobia so intense it just wraps back around to “i only respect trans people if they’re sufficientlyosha cis-passing” except that his standards for “cis-passing” are not shared by anyone, except perhaps space aliens. Has a variety of convoluted feeling regarding nonbinary identity which may or may not be related to his feelings regarding true osha-ness as being beyond the constraints of the male gender…
Shidou’s opinions on trans people are of the “i’m straight so whatever makes my dick hard is a woman faggot”, a viewpoint he applies even to the cis guys that he tops. Honestly getting chaser (both transmasc and transfem) vibes from him.
